FIRST, OUR VIEWS:

THE MEDIUM IS NOT THE MESSAGE

the medium is the message The Canadian philosopher, scholar, literary critic, and communications theorist Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase "The Medium is the Message." This phrase means that the medium through which a message is conveyed tends to dominate the content of the message itself. That is, the medium has a greater impact on our perception and behavior than the ideas and information it carries. People immediately see an image but must think for a while to understand the message that the image conveys. Jesus often spoke in parables: "A sower went out to sow the seed, and some fell on a footpath, shallow ground, among weeds, or on good soil" (Mark 3:1-13). But most often the crowds and even His disciples didn't get the point, so He would have to explain it. The word-pictures immediately resonated with them, but what did they mean?

In a recent First Things article, I read that in American conservatism – "a fissure that has been widening for years: a clash between two visions of the right, one grounded in universal moral principle, the other in cultural and civilizational loyalty." The latter phrase – "cultural and civilizational loyalty" – refers to the linguistic and ethnic traditions of our society. But there needn't be a "fissure," a contradiction, between these and "universal moral principle." The problem is that they're confusing the medium with the message. Our idioms of speech, food, clothing, even our facial features and skin color, convey the message of what is near and dear to us, but are not the same as faith, freedom, and truth. We tend to prefer people "like us" and dislike those who are "different." A weakness of human reasoning is that we tend to think in terms of either-or logic. It's harder to think in both-and, "synthesis" logic. Faithfulness between my wife and me is not the same thing as liking her face, voice, rosy cheeks and the food she prepares for me, but they belong together.

In our churches, we become familiar with and fond of the style of music, the (usually somewhat lofty and archaic) language, the phrases, the clergy's special robes, the incense, stained glass, and the architecture. These things are intended to help convey the message but are not identical with the message, the doctrinal truths about God, the Incarnation of Christ, forgiveness, salvation, and the pursuit of holiness. The melodies and instruments (or none), whether the language is of an old "mother country" or Latin, Greek, or the local dialect – these all are parts of the medium, the vessels that carry the content, the message. Orthodox churches in Africa use drums and dance to convey the message, but in the U.S. we usually sing a capella.

German Cardinal Gerhard Müller recently said that “in twenty to thirty years, Islam could become the dominant religion” in Germany. How could this happen, that by 2050 Germany will become Germistan, France will become Frankistan, and Britain will become Britistan? It is already happening: London itself is already "Londistan" – more than 50% are not native English. The majority of young schoolchildren in many major European cities are Muslim kids. It is because the elite leadership of most European countries have completely bought into the worldview of vague generalities: democracy, liberty, equality, brotherhood of all nations, and multi-culturalism. But this ignores one essential thing: what is the foundation?

The foundation of European (and all Western) civilization is Christianity. But in the last century or so, this foundation has been undermined and eroded, especially in Europe, so that the generalities of democracy, liberty, equality, and brotherhood cannot withstand the vast flood of Muslim migration and the violent, exclusive doctrines of Islam. Similar to original Christianity, Islam is an exclusive religion. But when Islam becomes the majority, it does not does not treat other religions equally. Original Christianity's exclusivity, however, generally tolerated the presence of other religions. But beginning with the French Revolution, secularism began to spread throughout the West, undermining the moral and spiritual foundations.

What must be done? "If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Psalm 11:3). David, who wrote this Psalm, wasn't a weak-kneed hand-wringer, he was king and military leader. To him, the answer was obvious: we must rebuild the foundations! We need to re-establish genuine Christian communities where people believe in and live by a shared creed. The only creed in common between Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox is the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. Various churches may have other creeds or statements of faith that are more or less similar to this one, but the Nicene Creed is the only creed that Orthodox, Catholics, and most Protestants can jointly agree on.

People sometimes hold onto the outward language, symbols and rituals of religion long after they cease to truly believe in and live by the doctrines their religion teaches: the medium has dominated and overwhelmed the message. Often in the Old Testament the people of Israel fell into idolatry, while maintaining their Temple ceremony, holy days, and sacrifices. We need to re-establish Christian communities in which we live in close proximity and encourage one another to really live in agape-love, according to what we say we believe, and to reach out to "the poor, maimed, blind, and lame." And we must teach and raise up our children to understand and believe in our shared faith.

We have developed a plan and design for such accessible and inclusive "Agape Restoration Communities." Please read "Building the ARC" and download the PDF file! This will take alot of self-discipline, commitment, sacrifice, and just plain hard work to rebuild the foundations, just like it took much effort and withstanding ridicule for Noah to build the Ark. But it must be done, because the alternative of letting our society crumble around us while we hang onto the status-quo is unthinkable.

Pray for a spiritual awakening, for Christians to return to the principle doctrines and practices of our faith, to live out what we believe.

A Personal Note: Kayla, the first-grade daughter of Maureen, a single mom in Nairobi, Kenya, is ready and waiting to return to school on January 6. Maureen injured her back doing physical labor last month and was in hospital. Now she's home recovering, but lacks the money to pay for Kayla's school (primary school isn't government-funded in Kenya). Maureen needs 22,936 Kenyan shillings (about $180) to pay for the next trimester. If you can help Kayla go back to school, please go to https://Agape-Restoration-Society.org/donate.htm and designate for "Kayla's school fees" – thank you!

One of our Morning Prayers contacts, "Y" – a gospel worker from Pakistan, wrote to us this week: "Just remember me and my family in prayers. I had to run out of my country due to the blasphemy law and Muslims tried to kill us because they told us we disrespected their prophet. So my children and wife are hiding and I managed to escape. Please pray that we can be together and safe." Please pray for "Y."

My beautiful bride and wonderful wife Cheryl continues to heal and recover from two broken vertebrae and two spinal fusion surgeries. Please keep on praying for her complete healing.

NEXT, THE NEWS:

2. SOUTH DAKOTA SUES MAYDAY HEALTH OVER GAS STATION ABORTION ADS
from: LiveAction

SYNOPSIS: South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is suing Mayday Health over gas station ads promoting abortion pills. The ads direct women to websites offering mail-order abortion pills, which are illegal in South Dakota. Jackley issued a "cease and desist" letter earlier this month, which Mayday Health initially ignored.

Mayday Health claims the billboards are protected by the First Amendment right to free speech. Jackley argues promoting illegal activities is not legally protected. The billboards were running at 14 locations in the state. However, according to Jackley's office, there are now only two locations. The court will hold a hearing to consider Jackley's request for an injunction.

Pray for an end to the indiscriminate mailing of abortion pills anywhere in the U.S., and that the anti-life ideology of abortion on demand will be outlawed again.

3. ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH TO CONCELEBRATE WITH METROPOLITAN OF KYIV AT EPIPHANY IN THE PHANAR
from: RISU

SYNOPSIS: Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will concelebrate with Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine on the Feast of Epiphany at the Phanar, the headquarters of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople (today called Istanbul). The joint Divine Liturgy highlights the liturgical communion between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

Following the liturgy, both Patriarch Bartholomew and Metropolitan Epifaniy will preside over the Great Blessing of the Waters at the Phanar waterfront. (Both the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine use the new calendar for Church holy days.)

Thank the Lord that the Ecumenical Patriarch recognizes and is supporting the Orthodox Church of Ukraine that is free from Russian control.

4. A CHRISTMAS STORY
from: American Life League

SYNOPSIS: This article reflects on the spirit of Christmas and encourages a pro-life perspective. It emphasizes the importance of expectant mothers giving birth, allowing their babies to live out their lives. The text acknowledges various ways women can embrace motherhood, including adoption and service.

The author draws parallels between Mary and Joseph's responses to God and the choices women make. It highlights that saying "yes" to God, as Mary did, is central to the Christmas story and faith. The article encourages readers to embrace God's actions, even in difficult times. The ultimate message is a prayer for peace, God's goodness, and renewed faith through Christ's birth.

Ask the Lord for Christians to reject the frivolous and sacreligious celebrations that have crept into Christmas, the Incarnation of God on Earth.

5. MICROHOMES TO GIVE ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES A HOME OF THEIR OWN
from: Disability Scoop

SYNOPSIS: LifeQuest is building a microhome village in Mitchell, South Dakota, to provide independent living for adults with developmental disabilities. The village will have six 660-square-foot homes, each with a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen, plus a staff office. The project is expected to be completed by June or July, with residents paying rent and handling home upkeep.

The $2 million project is primarily funded through private donations, grants, and LifeQuest. Executive Director Pam Hanna calls it a groundbreaking project providing a "sense of home" for residents. Three residents have already committed to move in, and LifeQuest is working to fill the remaining homes. The village aims to allow residents more independence, with staff on-site and remote monitoring for safety.

Thank God that good-hearted people are building accessible homes for physically and developmentally disabled people in South Dakota.

6. SCIENTISTS REVERSE ALZHEIMER’S IN MICE AND RESTORE MEMORY
from: Science Daily

SYNOPSIS: Researchers are challenging the long-held belief that Alzheimer's disease is irreversible. A study found that a decline in the brain's energy molecule, NAD+, drives Alzheimer's. Restoring NAD+ balance in mouse models reversed Alzheimer's pathology and restored cognitive function, even in advanced cases. The research suggests that treatments focusing on restoring brain energy balance could potentially lead to Alzheimer's recovery.

The study, led by Kalyani Chaubey, used a pharmacologic compound, P7C3-A20, to restore NAD+ balance. The results showed full cognitive recovery in mice, offering hope for potential human trials. Dr. Andrew A. Pieper and the research team express cautious optimism about these findings and the possibility of shifting from slowing decline to disease recovery.

Praise the Lord for this advance in medical science that might reverse the mental deterioration of Alzheimer's disease.

7. NEW LAWS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN THE US ADOPTED IN 2025
from: Disabled World

SYNOPSIS: This article provides an informative overview of 2025 legislative developments affecting Americans with disabilities, examining both federal and state-level policy changes and their practical implications. While the One Big Beautiful Bill Act introduced substantial Medicaid cuts totaling $911 billion over ten years - raising concerns given that Medicaid serves over a quarter of disabled adults and funds essential long-term support services - the overall legislative landscape showed net positive progress.

Key federal advances include the Department of Transportation's Wheelchair Rule enhancing airline accessibility, finalized Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines standardizing sidewalk and transit infrastructure, expanded digital accessibility requirements for government websites under ADA Title II, and a Supreme Court ruling simplifying disability discrimination litigation.

Pray for people, especially Christians, to personally demonstrate compassion for people with disabilities, not simply leaving it up to the government and legal system.

BUILDING THE ARC

building the ARC You might ask – "Do I look like Noah? Why would I want to Build the ARC, anyway?" Here's why: my wife and I were missionaries to Russia for 17 years. Secular materialism has led to the de-Christianizing of the world: in its extreme form of communism, about 250,000 church buildings in Russia were destroyed or confiscated and turned into museums, breweries, factories or "Lenin Houses of Culture" during the Soviet era. Secularization worldwide continues to lead many people to become dependent on the state for answers to all their problems, diminishing the role of the church in society.

Poor, disabled, and elderly Christians must free themselves from the idea that an unnamed "they" – meaning someone else: the government or "the rich" or other Christians – ought to pay to build wheelchair-accessible housing and new churches. But the secular state isn't going to do it, the rich generally aren't very charitable, and there isn't enough money in all the Christian churches and mission organizations in the whole world for these organizations to build enough of such buildings so that our country and other countries can again be called "Christian nations."

Almost all Christians, however, including poor, disabled, and elderly people, have a place to live, so Christians already have the wealth needed to carry out the task of re-Christianizing their countries, in the form of their current homes. This is a "DIY" (Do It Yourself) project: by exchanging their current home for a home in an ARC – an Agape Restoration Community, they are providing a wheelchair-accessible building where a church can gather to worship and fulfill its God-ordained ministry to "the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind." We need to restore the spirit of agape-love and voluntary mutual self-help communities, then simply train and organize ourselves to just do it! We have the training and organization ready to go!

How do you start building it? First, you gather people who are committed to living together as Christians in community. In his book The Benedict Option, Rod Dreher describes the immense pressure in today's world to force moral and ethical compromise upon Christians and tells how to apply The Rule of St. Benedict to the Christian life not in a monastery, but striving to lead a life of spiritual discipline and genuine Christian community in the midst of a secularized society.

By mutually supporting each other in an "Agape Restoration Community," living out our Christian faith on a day-to-day basis, we will be able to withstand these pressures! Another good book that explains The Rule of St. Benedict in laypeople's language and how to apply it in everyday life is The Rule of Benedict: Christian Monastic Wisdom for Daily Living by Rev. Dr. Jane Tomaine. The Church must reclaim its proper role of Enabling the Disabled: ...Welcoming the Disabled to Your Church, as Rev. Dr. Theresa Taylor writes in her book.

So get started: the priest, pastor, or deacon must prepare a "ministry team" in his parish by teaching our 1-year online program "Social Ministry of the Church" on the "how and why" of reaching out to people with disabilities in the surrounding community. Another excellent book is Building the Benedict Option by Leah Libresco that tells how to gather two or three together to form such a ministry team. Then the priest, pastor, or deacon of the associated church will serve as director of the local ARS branch.

When enough people have subscribed for shares, the local branch can take out a construction loan to build a new Agape Restoration Community. Enroll in our free courses to see how YOU can do diakonia-ministry. And Join "The ARC" Chat/Video Forum to Build the ARC!

CAN YOU SPARE A CUP OF COFFEE FOR OUR MINISTRY?

If just 5% of the people who see this would give $5 per month (just 17¢ per day!) – the average cost of a coffee at Starbucks – we could cover our operating expenses and do much more in spreading the word, supporting orphans, and providing accessible housing for the disabled. So please DONATE ...thanks!
