FIRST, OUR VIEWS:

MINISTRY BUILDS UP THE BODY OF CHRIST

Ministry Driven Church book The idea of "ministry" is woven throughout the Bible, especially the New Testamant. It is the "secret ingredient" that builds up the Body of Christ, His Bride – the Church. If we wonder why churches aren't flourishing but instead are languishing and shrinking, the answer is found in a lack of training people to do ministry. Ministry is what drives the Church, making it grow!

All too often, pastors and staff are focused on securing the external, visible structure of their churches: budgets, buildings, and bills to pay. Church council meetings are mostly about whether the offerings are matching the budgeted income, whether the building and grounds are being adequately maintained, and salaries for the pastor and staff are being paid on time. But what's happening with ministry and outreach? Visiting the sick and disabled, providing support for orphans and widow(er)s, reaching out to the community are given short shrift – perhaps a collection of canned foods once or twice a year. Those churches aren't growing, they're just "marching in place" going nowhere.

From the foreword of my book: "What is the purpose of the Church? This book, The Ministry Driven Church, [will] forcefully demonstrate that ministry is the purpose, the missing key in the formula for rapid multiplication of churches. Ministry in all its diverse meanings ties together the manifold aspects of a living, healthy and growing church. Many modern books on small groups, evangelism, missions, discipleship and church growth rely upon new methods, techniques and technology.

"This is not entirely mistaken, but they run the risk of ignoring the foundational truths of the New Testament for the sake of novelty. This work tries to adhere very closely to the New Testament teachings on 'ministering to the building up of the Body of Christ.' It utilizes the inspired Word of God as the primary bibliographical source, and taps into other sources, old and new, only as secondary witnesses to God’s unchanging truth in Scripture."

The key phrase "ministering to the building up of the Body of Christ" is found in Ephesians 4:11-13 – "He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers to equip the saints to do the work of ministering to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature, perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ."

Note carefully the context of this phrase: Christ provides apostolic leadership: pastors, preachers, and evangelists to equip the saints to do the work. Christ didn't give us the pastors, preachers, and evangelists to do all the work themselves! Their job is to equip and train "the saints" – that's every Christian, laypeople and ordained alike – to do the work of ministry! We are all "called to be saints" as St. Paul wrote in several of his letters in the New Testament.

When Barnabas and Saul – the future Apostle Paul – went to Antioch (see Acts 11:20-26), they found a bunch of Gentile disciples, folllowers of Yeshua, the Jewish Messiah – they translated that as "Yesous, the Khristos" and from them we get the term "Khristianin" in Greek, or "Christian." But read verse 26 carefully: "the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch." What were they called at first, before they were called "Christians"? They were disciples! So a disciple is a Christian, and a Christian is a disciple. Period.

You don't first become a Christian, and then later decide if you want to "get really religious" and become a disciple. No! If you are a Christian, you must be a disciple, a follower of what Christ did and taught His disciples to do. Christ didn't just tell them parable-stories and say, "Now, you memorize these stories so you can tell them to kids in Sunday School." What did Jesus do? He didn't just preach the Gospel, the Good News, He also fed the hungry multitudes He healed the sick, the blind, and the lame, He even raised the dead. Then he told His disciples – "Now it's your turn, you go out and do the same!" (Matthew 10 and Luke 10). This is what a disciple, a real Christian follower of the Khristos – the Christ, really is, or ought to become.

Pray that God will awaken the apostolic church leadership: to train and equip the saints-in-progress, the disciples (real Christians), to do the ministry of building up the Body of Christ, the Church. It's an unfinished task, so lets get to work!

A Personal Note: My wonderful wife Cheryl continues to make progress in her recovery from two spinal fusion surgeries. It's been almost one year since the first surgery and eight months since the second one, so she likely has about another year before end-of-healing. But she's walking a little more often now with a cane instead of a walker or rollator, so that's progress!

NEXT, THE NEWS:

2. KENYA’S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY PASSES BILL OUTLAWING COMMERCIAL SURROGACY
from: LiveAction

SYNOPSIS: Kenya's National Assembly passed the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Bill 2022, regulating fertility treatments and surrogacy. The bill outlaws commercial surrogacy, human cloning, and sex selection, while permitting altruistic surrogacy for specific Kenyan citizens. Violators of the law, particularly those involved in commercial surrogacy, could face up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to 10 million Kenyan shillings.

The legislation establishes an ART Committee to oversee clinics, experts, and a national register. Live Action argues that surrogacy, in all forms, is exploitative and harmful to women and children. Only Kenyans aged 25-55 can pursue altruistic surrogacy, with surrogate mothers aged 25-45 required to undergo medical and psychological assessments. The law mandates written consent for surrogacy and prohibits using reproductive material after death without prior approval.

Thank the Lord that Kenya passed this law protecting women from the exploitation of commercial surrogacy.

3. ARCHONS EXPRESS “DISMAY” OVER WHITE HOUSE MEETINGS WITH RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CLERGY TIED TO PUTIN
from: RISU

SYNOPSIS: The Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate expressed "dismay" over meetings between White House officials, Congressional leaders, and Russian Orthodox clergy in Washington. The Archons view the clergy as "boosters of Vladimir Putin's war" and accuse them of attempting to manipulate American policymakers. They cite a report mentioning lobbyists and clergy with ties to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), a supporter of Putin's war, are meeting with the Trump administration.

The Archons criticize the meetings as a deceptive attempt to legitimize Russia's use of the Orthodox Church for its foreign policy aims. U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) is quoted highlighting the pressure and persecution faced by the canonical Orthodox Church of Ukraine. [One of the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate is a member of the church this newsletter's author attends.]

Ask God to block the Russian Church being used as a tool for Russia's military aggression in Ukraine, attempting to dominate Ukrainian Orthodox believers and thus control society.

4. THE PRO-LIFE IMPERATIVE
from: American Life League

SYNOPSIS: The article, by Judie Brown, discusses the pro-life stance in the context of global trends. It contrasts the debate over euthanasia in Mexico with the situation in Canada, where euthanasia is legal and prevalent. The Archdiocese of Mexico City opposes euthanasia, warning against totalitarian and eugenic ideologies. Canada has seen a significant number of deaths by euthanasia, nearly 1 in 20.

The article emphasizes the importance of unconditional love for life, drawing on the experience of Benjamin Turland and his grandmothers: both died from Medical Assistance in Dying within two months of each other. The author urges Americans to uphold human dignity and stand against the "culture of death." The ultimate pro-life imperative, according to the article, is love, as inspired by Saint Paul's words to the Romans – “Love can cause no harm to your neighbor, and so love is the fulfillment of the law.”

Praise the Lord that Christians in Mexico have taken a public stand against euthanasia, and Pray that believers in Canada will be bold in taking a similar stand.

6. MENTAL EXERCISE CAN REVERSE A BRAIN CHANGE LINKED TO AGING, STUDY FINDS
from: National Public Radio

SYNOPSIS:A new study found that cognitive training can increase levels of acetylcholine, a key brain chemical that declines with age, in people aged 65 and older. Participants in the study engaged in 30 minutes of rigorous mental exercises daily for 10 weeks, increasing acetylcholine levels by 2.3% in a brain area involved in attention and memory. This increase, though modest, may reverse the typical age-related decline in acetylcholine levels, potentially "turning back the clock" by about 10 years, according to Étienne de Villers-Sidani.

The study compared participants doing cognitive exercises using the BrainHQ program to those playing games like solitaire and Candy Crush, with only the cognitive training group showing increased acetylcholine levels. Michael Hasselmo suggests even small increases in acetylcholine can significantly impact memory and thinking, and that brain training could potentially offer benefits similar to early Alzheimer's drugs.

Pray for seniors to realize the need to stay mentally active, learning new languages, solving crossword puzzles, reading books, and other activities to improve their memory and thinking.

7. MOM PRESSURED TO TAKE ABORTION DRUGS SAYS PREGNANCY CENTER SAVED BABY'S LIFE
from: Christian Post

SYNOPSIS: Jessica Williams shared her story of how a pregnancy center in Las Vegas helped her after she took the first abortion pill under pressure from her husband. Williams, facing marital problems and pressure, ordered abortion pills online, taking the first one (mifepristone) before regretting her decision. She sought help and found a pregnancy resource center, First Choice Pregnancy Services, that provided an ultrasound and the abortion pill reversal treatment.

First Choice offered support beyond the reversal, including diapers, emotional support groups, and parenting resources. Williams's daughter, now 3, is healthy, and Williams credits the pregnancy center with saving her life. The article highlights the work of pregnancy centers, referencing the Charlotte Lozier Institute's report on the services they provide. Marjorie Dannenfelser of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America emphasized the importance of pregnancy resource centers within the pro-life movement.

Thank the Lord for the pregnancy center in Las Vegas that helped Jessica Williams save her baby's life after Jessica husband forced her to take an abortion pill.

ANSWER THE CALL!

answer the callAll Christians, not just clergy or monks, are called to be saints. The main task of bishops, pastors, deacons, evangelists and teachers isn't just to lead worship services and teach doctrine (although that's important too!), it's to equip the saints to offer service, to do the work of ministry (diakonia in Greek) to build up the Body of Christ, the Church (Ephesians 4:12), the Ark of our Salvation. That's why we're Building the ARC.

Ever since Christ established the Church, it has been compared to the Ark: see Hebrews 11:7. The water of the Great Flood has its antitype in the water of baptism, which saves us just like Noah and his family were saved from the Flood by being in the Ark. The Apostle Peter wrote -

"God waited patiently in the days of Noah, while the ark was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you - not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 3:20-21).

Back then, most of the people laughed at Noah building the Ark and went about their ordinary business / busyness, not thinking this was a matter of life or death. YOU have a 70% probability that you'll need at least home healthcare: over 2/3 of retired people will spend on average about 3 years disabled before we depart this life. This is not something to laugh at or ignore, it's a real risk that people need to prepare for before it happens. We need to build the ARC!

The word "holy" comes from the same Greek word as "saint" which means to be set apart or totally committed to serving God. So all of us, clergy and laypeople alike, are called to be holy, to be saints: "...as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance, but just as He who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior; because it is written, 'You shall be holy; for I am holy'" (1 Peter 1:14-16).

The main task of pastors and teachers is (or ought to be) "to equip the saints to do the work of ministering to the building up of the Body of Christ" - the goal is to make every member a minister: that's how the Body of Christ, the Church, will be built up! As the culture becomes less and less Christian, "Cultural Christianity" - just going through the motions one hour a week or so - won't cut it anymore. What's needed is an environment where we can live out our faith on a 24/7 basis. Building the ARC is more than just a building, it's a complete lifestyle change:

"Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:1-2). "Many are called, but few are chosen" (Matthew 22:14). God has called you to total commitment! Have you chosen to answer the call? Enroll in our free courses to see how YOU can do diakonia-ministry. And Join "The ARC" Chat/Video Forum to Build the ARC!

Yours sincerely,
