FIRST, OUR VIEWS:

WHAT IS "SECULAR3"?

[NOTE: I wrote most of this article the week before the reporting of the senseless murder of Iryna Zarutska by a deranged career criminal with a grudge against white people, and the assassination of Charlie Kirk – a 31-year-old father of two little children who devoted his life to peaceful, civil debate about the ills of modern American society. These awful events underscore the urgency of this article.]

sacred and/or secularSacred | Secular. Is this an either/or question, or a both-and question? Our modern mindset leads us to think of it as either/or, either sacred or secular. But is that the way we should approach this hugely important issue? Perhaps both-and is better. The article "Three Meanings of ‘Secular'’' explains what "secular" has come to mean in the present day. This threefold concept is based on the book A Secular Age by Charles Taylor, a British scholar, published by Harvard University's Belknap Press. This probably sounds rather stuffy and intellectual, so I've done a little research on it in order to attempt here to boil it down into just several paragraphs. Let's begin –

Secular3 refers to a concept formulated by philosopher Charles Taylor, describing a society where religious belief is no longer assumed or mandatory, but is one among many possible worldviews – this is sometimes called "Taylorian secularity" or "secularity 3". Charles Taylor identifies three meanings of secularity:

Secular1: Religion's reduced role in public institutions.

Secular2: Decline in personal religious belief or practice.

Secular3: A cultural condition where belief in religion is no longer automatic and must be consciously chosen – everyone is aware of religious and non-religious alternatives and must actively select their own worldview, making belief itself "fragile" in comparison to earlier eras.

(If this whets your curiosity, for a 4-page review of Taylor's 776-page A Secular Age, click HERE.)

Importance of Secular3:
Secular3 does not mean a society is non-religious; religious belief may still be widespread, but belief is always held alongside an array of viable, competing options: doubt and lack of certainty.

This condition changes how people experience faith – beliefs are adopted more as personal choices within a diverse marketplace of possibilities, rather than inherited communal certainties.

Secular3 underlies much of contemporary Western society, affecting how individuals relate to morality, meaning, and tradition.

     Summary Table: Secularity Types
Secular Type   Core Focus Social Condition
Secular1 Public institutions and laws Separation of church and state
Secular2 Individual belief and practice     Decline in personal religious adherence
Secular3 Separation of church and state     All beliefs are optional and chosen among competing alternatives

Secular3 is widely referenced in philosophy, sociology, and discussions of modern Western culture to explain how individuals and societies negotiate religion and meaning in pluralistic contexts. What are some examples of historical events of the ancient, medieval, secular1. secular2, and secular3 eras? . . .

A Personal Note: Simon, the director of Vision Complex Orphanage and School in Tanzania, writes: "This is a used minibus, and it is a kind of a van we want to buy. It costs $7000, and the owner has accepted installments until we complete paying him, then we will own it. So far, we have collected $200 for this minibus." If you can help buy the bus, please go to https://Agape-Restoration-Society.org/donate.htm and designate for "Vision Complex: minibus" – thank you!

Our new $33 microphone is installed and working! Here's a photo of our "recording studio." The lamp is just a basic $20 desk lamp that I got from Amazon.com in Jan. 2024. Then I traced a circle around the lampshade on a sheet of paper, cut it out and put it just inside the lampshade to soften the light. So altogether, our "recording studio" costs just $53 + tax. We've been using my PC's built-in mic up to now for our "Morning Prayers" daily podcasts, but the sound volume and quality wasn't very good, you couldn't hear our recordings very well. This new mic is louder and clearer: here's the first recording with the new mic on Wednesday, 3 Sept. (When I'm working otherwise at my desk, I point the lamp toward the bulletin board and swing the mic to the side.)

And in case you might ask what those drawings are on the bulletin board, here's a closer-up photo and a link to our updated ARC sketches for "BUILDING THE ARC" – fully accessible housing and a community room/chapel for people with mobility issues (that's about 15% of the U.S. population). What Did Jesus Do (WDJD)? Christ did a "Show and Tell" – He first showed His disciples how to share the Good News, the Gospel, in word and deed by preaching, caring for the sick, maimed and lame; then He told them to go out and do the same.

Did you know that only about 5% of the people you invite to church will actually come? And they won't come if they can't get in! But 100% of the people you bring to an accessible church will come! Don't just sit back and wait for people to come to church: the Lord said, "Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled" (Luke 14:23). That's what we, the Church, should be doing today. But somehow, we've lost track of that: in the Great Commission (Matthew ch. 28), the old King James version reads – "Go into all the world and teach all nations..." – however, that's actually a poor translation. The original Greek text says – "Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations." In other words, "DWJD" – "Do What Jesus Did!" Become a real disciple!

NEXT, THE NEWS:

2. FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS ARE NOT 'FOR STATES TO DECIDE'
from: LiveAction

SYNOPSIS: Justice Amy Coney Barrett defended the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision, arguing states should decide abortion legality, not the Supreme Court, a view contested by the author. The Dobbs decision allows states to have vastly different abortion laws, ranging from near-total protection of preborn life to allowing abortion throughout pregnancy. The author contends that the right to life is a fundamental human right, not a matter for popular vote, citing the 13th Amendment's abolition of slavery as a precedent and the 14th Amendment's guarantee of life, liberty, and due process.

The author argues that Dobbs improperly delegated the determination of whether preborn human beings are entitled to protection under the law to state-level voters, effectively permitting the killing of innocent humans in the womb. The author highlights that various states have implemented differing abortion laws since the Dobbs ruling, illustrating the significant variations in protection for preborn children. The author concludes that allowing states to decide whether preborn children are protected by the right to life is unconstitutional, referencing the 14th Amendment and the inherent wrongness of murder.

Pray for people to realize that human rights originate from nature and nature's God, not from decisions of state or national government.

3. ZELENSKY REFUTES CARLSON'S ACCUSATIONS OF 'PERSECUTING' UOC MP
from: RISU

SYNOPSIS: During an interview on TBN, with Jewish Protestant journalist Joel Rosenberg, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described accusations against the Ukrainian authorities regarding the oppression of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate as "manipulations." This was reported by the Telegram channel 7x70. According to him, over 70% of Ukrainians are believers, and the state does not restrict their freedom of religion.

Zelensky emphasized that no one is being persecuted; rather, the law only prohibits religious organizations from having legal ties with the "aggressor country" – Russia. Zelensky pointed out that this is a legal requirement during wartime, not a closure of churches. Journalist Rosenberg expressed gratitude for the explanation and described the accusations of persecution as “a terrible lie.” Additionally, he presented President Zelensky with a Hebrew Bible from Jerusalem.

Ask the Lord for western Christians, especially conservatives, to discern that the idea of Ukraine persecuting the UOC-MP is disinformation coming from Russia.

4. A DEADLY TRANSITION
from: American Life League

SYNOPSIS: This article criticizes the "political gamesmanship" surrounding pro-life issues, arguing that it's as harmful as debates about gender transition. The author contends that a human being begins at conception, and that all life should be protected based on science, philosophy, and faith. The author cites a Texas law intended to restrict the sale of abortion pills, highlighting exceptions and arguing it effectively allows abortion.

The author accuses the law of failing to protect the unborn, essentially allowing women to use abortion pills without consequences. The author describes the abortion pill as "stealthy murder," citing Pope Francis' condemnation of such actions and contrasting it with the actions of the U.S. Health and Human Services secretary. The author asserts that the transition from respecting human dignity to accepting the disposability of the unborn is morally reprehensible. The author suggests expectant mothers who use abortion pills are morally complicit in the death of their children.

Pray against "political gamesmanship" in Texas and other pro-life states that put on a show of protecting unborn babies but in the fine print include exceptions that allow abortion.

5. HOW AN ICE CREAM SHOP IS CHALLENGING THE 'SHORT BUS' STIGMA
from: Disability Scoop

SYNOPSIS: Emily Danciu-Grosso and Johnny Ilie, owners of the ice cream bus Goodness Gracious Great Balls of Love, are challenging the negative stigma associated with "short buses" used to transport students with disabilities. The business is designed to provide job training and employment opportunities for people with disabilities, including customer service and soft skill development. Danciu-Grosso's personal experience with her sister, who has an intellectual/developmental disability, inspired the creation of this business model.

Danciu-Grosso aims to address the limited job opportunities faced by adults with disabilities after they age out of programs, focusing on employment skills rather than pity. The ice cream bus offers a practical, accessible, and engaging environment to learn and grow job skills for people with disabilities. Emily Danciu-Grosso is partnering with the city of St. Petersburg to provide career exploration workshops and a comprehensive job training program for young adults with disabilities. The business model focuses on a mobile platform to engage with the community and teaches practical skills, including customer service, hygiene, and organization.

Thank the Lord for Emily's love and creative care about people with disabilities, inspired by her sister Noelle who has an ntellectual/developmental disability

6. THE END OF NATURAL PARENTHOOD
from: First Things

SYNOPSIS:Ten years ago, Obergefell v. Hodges redefined parenthood, shifting from recognizing natural parent-child bonds to prioritizing adult rights, leading to a decline in legal protections for biological parents. Katy Faust argues that the erosion of biological ties harms children, citing increased risks of abuse and neglect in non-biological households, and the psychological effects of "mother hunger" or "father hunger." The legal presumption of paternity, historically strong, has been weakened and redefined as a gender-neutral "presumption of parentage," allowing for the erasure of biological fathers in legal documents.

Biological parents' rights to raise their children are being undermined by courts granting parental rights to unrelated adults, often displacing biological ties. Surrogacy contracts and pre-birth orders now allow the termination of parental rights before birth, overriding traditional parental consent requirements. The "best interests of the child" standard is being reinterpreted to prioritize adult relationships over biological connections, allowing courts to deny genetic testing and favor social parentage. The rights of biological fathers are diminished through the dismissal of sperm donors as parents, eroding their legal responsibilities and inheritance rights for their children.

Pray that married natural parents will insist on their right to raise their children as they see fit, and not have this right taken away from them by legal manipulation.

7. A SEAT AT THE TABLE: AMPLIFYING THE VOICES OF YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
from: Disabled World

SYNOPSIS: This article presents a compelling call for systemic change by letting young people with disabilities meaningfully participate in policy-making and development initiatives. Written by disability rights activist Nir Shrestha, the piece challenges the tokenistic approach often taken toward youth with disabilities, who face dual exclusion from both mainstream disability advocacy and youth-focused programs. With an estimated 150 million young people with disabilities globally, the article outlines five concrete action steps including tailored capacity-building training, broadened exposure opportunities, accessible information systems, confidence-building support, and economic assistance.

The author draws on research from UNICEF and the International Labour Organization to demonstrate how structural barriers prevent qualified individuals from participating in opportunities, arguing that accessibility provisions should be viewed as fundamental rights rather than additional costs. This work is a valuable resource for policymakers, advocacy organizations, and educators trying to understand the intersection of youth and disability rights, offering practical guidance for creating more inclusive participation frameworks that benefit not only young people with disabilities but strengthen entire communities through new perspectives and contributions.

Praise the Lord for people who actually care about people with disabilities to actually DO SOMETHING about what they say they believe.

HERE'S HOW TO REACH THE WORLD

grace definedAt age 15 in 1958, while taking care of lawns at an apartment complex, the Lord gave me a vision: I saw a map of the Soviet Union in the sky and a voice said: "Remember this apartment complex plan - you'll build it when you're an old man." After serving 40 years in mission work that included 17 years in the USSR and Russia, I'm now in my 80s, so I guess I'm old enough to start this new project!

In a different message, I wrote about our *free* 1-year, 6-course training program "Social Ministry of the Church" that's in English and Russian to train people how to care for the disabled. The purpose of these courses is to prepare people for "Building the ARC" - an Agape Restoration Community: a Christian housing co-op with a built-in community room / chapel. All of the units will be wheelchair-accessible because of the aging of the "Baby Boomer" generation: 76 million people born between 1946 and 1965 have reached or are reaching retirement age (10,000/day = 3,650,000/year!), at which time 45% of these people are already disabled.

And as they continue aging, 70% of them will become disabled and require accessible housing or nursing home care before they pass on. This is a huge social concern: 70% of 3,650,000 people = 2,550,000 disabled people per year for the next 20 years = over 50 million people! Medicare will be insolvent by 2026 and Social Security will reach insolvency by 2034, the trustees of these funds report, so they won't be able to care for all these people at present levels. Our basic problem, however, is that like most people, we don't want to think about such things... until it's too late. Then, when we're too old and too feeble to pack up and move, our family may well be too far away or just too busy with their own jobs and family issues.

Christ commanded His disciples to "Bring in the poor, the maimed, the lame and the blind, go into the highways and the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that My house may be full" (Luke 14:21-23). This defines our ultimate target audience and our goal, but how can we "compel them to come in" unless they can come in? Why aren't the churches full? In many cases the "maimed, the lame and blind" can hardly get out of their homes, and getting transported to church is difficult or flat-out impossible.

Also, many church buildings aren't very wheelchair-accessible. Solution: "Build the ARC": a 12-unit building that forms an accessible, affordable Christian housing co-op including a community room/chapel, most living units wheelchair-accessible, plus parking spaces just outside wide enough for wheelchair use right next to the buildings. This is called "Aging in Place" or "MAGIC" – short for "Multi-Ability & -Generational Inclusive Communities," not being excluded, sent away to a senior living center or nursing home. And our "Social Ministry of the Church" courses will train the healthier residents as "home healthcare workers" to care for those who need it.

This isn't just one heart-touching story of one child with a disability -- it's Over 50 Million People, a huge percentage of our whole country! Perhaps you have a family member who needs accessible housing, or you're an "empty-nester" in your 50s, 60s, or 70s and you'd like to travel more, maybe do some short-term mission work, but who will take care of your house? Get one of our co-op units! (Hint: it's a lot easier to move when you're healthy than when you're crippled with arthritis, or your back or knees have worn out, or you've had a stroke, etc.) Consider NOW getting a home in an ARC: our Christian community! . . . .
